'Symphony of the Holocaust' debuts Thursday at the Zekelman Holocaust Center

Jewish violin prodigy Shony Alex Braun was a young man when he lost his family to concentration camps during World War II.

He managed to survive four of the camps himself, believing his musical talent is what saved him — both physically and mentally — by entertaining the Germans and composing a symphony in his mind to escape his trauma.

His resulting composition, “Symphony of the Holocaust,” would later be nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and serves as the eponymous basis of a 2023 documentary that will make its Michigan premiere Thursday at the the Zekelman Holocaust Center in Farmington Hills.

In addition to the film screening, the evening will feature a talkback with filmmaker Greg DeHart, Braun’s daughter Dinah Braun Griffin and violinist Erik Ghukasyan, who will also perform the symphony live.

“This is the story of one man’s indomitable spirit,” said Gabriella Burman, the Holocaust Center’s director
